Leading rider during the 2017 Spring Meet with 17 wins, including the Shakertown (G2) on Holding Gold and Commonwealth (G3) on Awesome Slew

During the 2016 Fall Meet, rode Miss Ella to win the Buffalo Trace Franklin County (G3).

Won the Marathon (G2) on Bailoutbobby during the Oct. 30 undercard of the first day of the 2015 Breeders' Cup World Championships. The next day, he rode Wavell Avenue to win the TwinSpires Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1).

Recorded 2,000th win in U.S. and Canada on April 23, 2015, at Keeneland.

Rode Rosalind to win the 2014 Central Bank Ashland (G1) in a dead heat with Room Service during the Spring Meet. In the Fall Meet, he won the JPMorgan Chase Jessamine (G3) on Rainha Da Bateria and the Buffalo Trace Franklin County on Free as a Bird.

Won a Spring Meet record 38 races in 2013, surpassing the previous mark of 32 wins by Randy Romero from 1990.

Twice won five races on a single card during the 2013 Spring Meet – on April 18 and April 25.

Won four graded stakes during the 2013 Spring Meet: the Beaumont (G2) Presented by Keeneland Select on Ciao Bella Luna; Elkhorn (G2) on Dark Cove; Appalachian (G3) Presented by Japan Racing Association on Unbelievable Dream; and Bewitch (G3) on Strathnaver (GB).

Background


Joel was the leading rider in the Dominican Republic four times, and won his first race at the Galapagos Hippodromo V Centenario there in 2000. He went to the jockey school in the Dominican Republic. Came to the U.S. in 2006, riding initially at Fairplex and then in Northern California.
