Keeneland Sales Produce Eight Horses Entered in Kentucky Derby

Keeneland sale graduate, Central Bank Ashland winner Malathaat is morning-line favorite for Kentucky Oaks
Eight graduates of Keeneland sales were entered today in the 147th running of the $3 million Kentucky Derby (G1) Presented by Woodford Reserve to be held Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Keeneland sales have produced 23 Kentucky Derby winners, including four of the past five: champion Nyquist (2016), Always Dreaming (2017), undefeated Triple Crown winner Justify (2018) and Authentic (2020). Justify and Authentic both were named Horse of the Year.

The 3-year-old colts who are alumni of Keeneland sales and are among the 20 horses entered in the 1¼-mile Kentucky Derby are:
Dynamic One (Union Rags-Beat the Drums) – Repole Stable, Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable own the colt, who was second in the Wood Memorial (G2) Presented by Resorts World Casino. Phipps bred Dynamic One, which Claiborne Farm, agent, consigned to the 2019 September Yearling Sale and sold to Repole and St. Elias for $725,000. Jose Ortiz will ride Dynamic One for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Hidden Stash (Constitution-Making Mark Money) – Vinery Sales, agent for breeder Rhineshire Farm, consigned the colt to the 2019 September Sale, where he sold for $50,000 to BBN II Racing. Second in the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (G2) and third in the Sam F. Davis (G3), Hidden Stash races for BBN Racing. Rafael Bejarano will ride the colt for trainer Vicki Oliver.

Highly Motivated (Into Mischief-Strong Incentive) – Second in Keeneland’s Toyota Blue Grass (G2) and third in the Gotham (G3), the colt is trained by Chad Brown for breeder and owner Klaravich Stables. Lane’s End, agent, consigned Highly Motivated as a weanling to the 2018 November Breeding Stock Sale, where Mike Ryan, agent, purchased him for $240,000. Javier Castellano will ride.

Like the King (Palace Malice-Like a Queen) – Horseshoe Racing bred the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) winner, who was second in the John Battaglia Memorial for owner M Racing Group of Mickey Gonzalez. Vinery Sales, agent, consigned the colt as a weanling to the 2018 November Sale, where he sold to The Acorn for $28,000. Drayden Van Dyke will ride Like the King for trainer Wesley Ward.

Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow-Catch the Moon) – Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings bred the colt, who won the Lecomte (G3), was second in the Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby (G2) and Iroquois (G3) Presented by Ford and finished third in the  Champagne (G1) and Risen Star (G2) Presented by Lamarque Ford. Owner Winchell Thoroughbreds purchased Midnight Bourbon for $525,000 at the 2019 September Sale, where he was consigned by Warrendale Sales, agent for Stonestreet Bred & Raised. Mike Smith will ride the colt for trainer Steve Asmussen.

Rock Your World (Candy Ride [ARG]-Charm the Maker) – Hronis Racing of Kosta and Pete Hronis along with David Michael Talla own the Runhappy Santa Anita Derby (G1) and Pasadena (L) winner. Bred by Ron McAnally and Deborah McAnally, he was consigned to the 2019 September Sale by Winter Quarter Farm, agent, and sold to Sapphire Stable for $650,000. Joel Rosario will ride Rock You World for trainer John Sadler.

Sainthood (Mshawish-Lemon Hero) – Bred by Edward Taylor and Springland Farm, the runner-up in the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) is a graduate of two Keeneland sales. Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, consigned him as a yearling to the 2019 January Horses of All Ages Sale, where The Legend Stables purchased him for $100,000. Taylor Made offered him at that year’s September Sale. Trained by Todd Pletcher for WinStar Farm and CHC Inc., he will be ridden by Corey Lanerie.

Super Stock (Dialed In-Super Girlie) – Owners Erv Woolsey and Keith Asmussen purchased the Arkansas Derby (G1) winner for $70,000 at the 2019 September Sale from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. Trained by Steve Asmussen, Super Stock was bred by Pedro Gonzalez and P.J. Gonzales. He also won the Texas Thoroughbred Futurity, was second in the Street Sense Overnight (L) and finished third in the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (G1) and Iroquois (G3) Presented by Ford. Super Stock will be ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr.

Malathaat leads field for Kentucky Oaks

Shadwell Stable’s undefeated Malathaat, who sold for $1.05 million at Keeneland’s 2019 September Yearling Sale and won the April 3 Central Bank Ashland (G1) during Keeneland’s recently concluded Spring Meet, is the 5-2 morning-line favorite among the 14 3-year-old fillies entered in Friday’s 147th running of the $1.25 million Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs.

Keeneland sales have produced the past four winners of the 1 1/8-mile Kentucky Oaks: champion Abel Tasman (2017), champion Monomoy Girl (2018), Serengeti Empress (2019) and Shedaresthedevil (2020).

Malathaat also is bidding to become the latest filly to win the Central Bank Ashland and the Kentucky Oaks. Thirteen fillies have won the two races, most recently Monomoy Girl. A total of 34 fillies who have competed in the Central Bank Ashland have won the Oaks. Another recent notable is 2016 Oaks winner Cathryn Sophia, who was third in the Central Bank Ashland.

The three Keeneland sales alumni – all graduates of the 2019 September Sale – entered in the 2021 Kentucky Oaks are:

Competitive Speed (Competitive Edge-Shopped Out) – John C. Minchello owns the filly, who won the Glitter Woman and was third in the Davona Dale (G2) and Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2). Bred by White Fox Farm, she was offered at the 2019 September Sale by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. Javier Gonzalez trains Competitive Speed, who will be ridden by Chris Landeros.

Malathaat (Curlin-Dreaming of Julia) – Shadwell Estate Co. Ltd. paid $1.05 million for the Central Bank Ashland and Demoiselle (G2) winner at the 2019 September Sale. Bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, she was consigned by Denali Stud, agent for Stonestreet Bred & Raised. John Velazquez will ride Malathaat for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Search Results (Flatter-Co Cola) – Klaravich Stables owns winner of the Gazelle (G3) and Busher Invitational (L), who is trained by Chad Brown. Select Sales, agent for breeder Machmer Hall, consigned the filly to the 2019 September Sale, where she sold to Mike Ryan, agent, for $310,000. Irad Ortiz Jr. will ride Search Results, who is the 3-1 co-second choice on the morning line.
