Undefeated Justify, a $500,000 purchase at Keeneland’s 2016 September Yearling Sale, now will bid for Thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown after his half-length victory today in a foggy running of the $1.5 million Preakness (G1) at Pimlico.
Two weeks ago, Justify captured the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) at Churchill Downs.
The final leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont (G1), is June 9 at Belmont Park.
Keeneland sales have produced 24 Preakness winners, including Exaggerator in 2016 and Cloud Computing in 2017 and four consecutive winners from 2010-2013: Lookin At Lucky, Shackleford, Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another and Oxbow.
Justify, the 2-5 Preakness favorite, was ridden by Mike Smith for trainer Bob Baffert. The Scat Daddy colt is owned by China Horse Club, Head of Plains Partners, Starlight Racing and WinStar Farm.
Breeder John D. Gunther’s Glennwood Farm, agent, consigned Justify to the September Sale, where he sold for $500,000 to China Horse Club and Maverick Racing.
Justify is the 22nd Keeneland sales graduate to win the Kentucky Derby. A total of 19 Keeneland sales alumni have won the Belmont.
Five of the eight 3-year-olds competing in the Preakness were graduates of Keeneland sales.
