This Day in Keeneland History: Oct. 16

LEXINGTON, KY (Oct. 16) Keeneland’s 2016 Fall Meet, which runs through Oct. 29, marks the track’s 80th anniversary. To celebrate this milestone, Barn Notes throughout the Fall Meet will look back at memorable races and highlights from Keeneland’s rich history.

Here are a few memorable moments from Oct. 16:

1965: Claiborne Farm’s Horse of the Year Moccasin scores a 15-length victory in the Alcibiades (now the Grade 1, $400,000 Darley Alcibiades won by Dancing Rags on Oct. 7). 

1980: Saron Stable’s Racing Hall of Famer Bold ‘n Determined scores the first of her three Keeneland victories in an allowance race. Nine days later, she will win the Spinster (G1) (now the $500,000 Juddmonte Spinster won by I’m a Chatterbox on Oct. 9) with Eddie Delahoussaye aboard for trainer Neil Drysdale. The following April, she will win the Bewitch.

1999: Leslie R. Grimm’s Witchful Thinking wins the inaugural running of the First Lady Stakes (now the Grade 1, $400,000 First Lady, won by Photo Call [IRE] on Oct. 8). Chris McCarron rides the winner for trainer Niall O’Callaghan.

1999: Hall of Famer Silver Charm parades at Keeneland on Three Chimneys Spinster Day. … The national unveiling of the Secretariat stamp takes place as part of the U.S. Postal Service’s “Celebrate the Century.”
