October 22, 2016

LEXINGTON, KY (Oct. 22) Keeneland’s 2016 Fall Meet, which runs through Oct. 29, marks the track’s 80th anniversary. To celebrate this milestone, Barn Notes throughout the Fall Meet will look back at memorable races and highlights from Keeneland’s rich history.

Here are a few noteworthy moments from Oct. 22:

1938: Belair Stud’s Racing Hall of Famer Johnstown wins the first Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland (now the Grade 1, $500,000 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity won by Classic Empire on Oct. 8) and the next year wins the Kentucky Derby. (The Breeders’ Futurity was inaugurated at the old Kentucky Association track near downtown Lexington in 1910.) Jimmy Stout rides the winner for trainer George Tappen.

1995: Overbrook Farm’s Cat Appeal wins the Thoroughbred Club of America (G3) (now a Grade 2, $250,000 race won by Irish Jasper on Oct. 8), held for the first time during the Fall Meet. Donna Barton rides the winner for trainer D. Wayne Lukas. From its inaugural running 1981 through 1994, the TCA was run during the Spring Meet. Five winners of the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) competed in the TCA: Groupie Doll (won 2012, second 2013), Musical Romance (second 2011), Dubai Majesty (won 2012) and Informed Decision (won 2009).
