LEXINGTON, KY (Oct. 26) Keeneland’s 2016 Fall Meet, which runs through Saturday, marks the track’s 80th anniversary. To celebrate this milestone, Barn Notes through the season is looking back at memorable races and highlights from Keeneland’s rich history.
Here are a few noteworthy moments from Oct. 26:
1968: Closing day of the 19-day Fall Meet during which horses owned by Mr. and Robert F. Roberts win 12 races, a record until equaled during the 17-day Fall season in 2012 by Kenneth L. and Sarah K. Ramsey. … Claiborne Farm becomes the first recipient of a Pitcher to signify 12 stakes victories at Keeneland.
1976: Racing Hall of Famer Foolish Pleasure parades on the track before being retired to Greentree Stud.
1991: Closing day of the 19-day Fall Meet during which Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day wins a record 45 races. The longer season results from the addition of Tuesday racing.
2013: Rosie Napravnik becomes the first female jockey to be a leading rider during a Keeneland meet when she wins 17 races during the 17-day season. Napravnik will win 16 races during the 2014 Fall Meet to repeat the title. … Keeneland sets a Fall Meet record when a total of 266,466 fans attend the races. The average of 15,674 also is a Fall Meet record.
