LEXINGTON, KY (Oct. 9) – Keeneland’s 2016 Fall Meet, which runs through Oct. 29, marks the track’s 80th anniversary.
Here are a few highlights from Oct. 9 over the years:
1999: Shadwell Farm begins its sponsorship of the Fall Meet’s premier one-mile race on turf. The winner of the first Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile (G2) is Juddmonte Farms’ homebred Kirkwall (GB), ridden by Victor Espinoza for trainer Bobby Frankel. (The Shadwell Turf Mile was known as the Keeneland Breeders’ Cup from 1986-1995, the Keeneland Breeders’ Cup Mile in 1996-1998 and the Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile in 1999-2003.)
2009: Opening day of the 17-day Fall Meet during which Keeneland begins to simulcast its racing product in high definition.
2010: Castleton Lyons Farm’s multiple champion Gio Ponti scores the first of his two consecutive victories in the Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) (which Miss Temple City won yesterday) en route to an Eclipse Award as champion male turf horse for 2010. Gio Ponti is one of three two-time winners of the race.
