LEXINGTON, KY (May 5, 2017) – China Horse Club and Clearsky Farms’ Abel Tasman, an alumnus of Keeneland’s 2015 September Yearling Sale, turned in an impressive last-to-first performance to win today’s $1 million Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs.
Clearsky bred Abel Tasman, a filly by Quality Road, and offered her at the September Sale.
Ridden in the Oaks by Mike Smith, Abel Tasman was last in the early going against 13 other 3-year-old fillies before finding her stride on the sloppy sealed track. She rallied on the outside and closed late to win by 1¼ lengths.
Trained by Bob Baffert, Abel Tasman earned $564,200 for the victory to increase her earnings to $912,060 with four wins, including the 2016 Starlet (G1), in seven starts.
