By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt
Hot List Key:
A: A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
3rd race – (5) Ms Boombastic exits a maiden special weight on the turf that got high speed figures. Trainer Bill Mott has very good numbers with the move to the claiming ranks for the first time. (3) Jazzy Lady showed a lot of promise as a 2-year-old racing on the turf for Ray Handal. She makes her 2020 debut in this $75,000 maiden claimer. She finished second in her career debut. (2) Baseline Drive takes the blinkers off after trying them for one race and drops back down to this claiming level where she ran third for Chad Brown at Saratoga and Irad gets on board for the first time. (8) She Throws Heat has been off since March when she ran third in her first try on the grass and in a maiden claimer at Gulfstream Park for Shug McGaughey.
6th race – (5) Price Talk actually crossed the finish line first in his first two races but in his debut he was disqualified from first and was placed fifth. The Jorge Abreu runner came right back to win while stepping up from a maiden claimer to a maiden special weight on the grass at Saratoga and now will face winners for the first time with Jose Lezcano staying on board. (1) La Hara has two wins and two seconds for Chad Brown and most recently missed by a neck in a first-level allowance at the Spa and Rosario is back in New York and will keep this mount. (4) Stanford will make his American debut and ships up from Keeneland for Wayne Catalano. In Europe he won twice including his most recent start in July on the grass in England and gets Lasix for the first time. (6) Bray was claimed out of a $40,000 N2L turf race by Repole Stable and Rudy Rodriguez and came right back to win a starter allowance with a win at Belmont Park and at Saratoga.
8th race – (2) Caddo River ran second in his debut for Brad Cox behind a very talented 2-year-old while pressing the pace in a similar seven-furlong maiden special weight. (1) Greatest Honour was third in the same race as the top choice. Shug McGaughey runners are rarely at 100% for their debuts, so this son of Tapit is expected to show improvement in here. (4) Chasing Fame had a promising debut for Doug O’Neill where he set the pace in a turf sprint. Race experience is so important for 2-year-olds and now he gets blinkers on and switches to the main track. (6) Original will make his debut for John Terranova who is very good with first-timers that have some quality and this guy cost $425,000 back in April. The dam has produced four winners already.
9th race – (7) Royal Approval broke her maiden at Kentucky Downs for Wesley Ward after last being seen racing at Royal Ascot as Ward likes to do. She went to the Group 2 race after running second in her debut at Gulfstream against the boys. Now she is in the Matron (G3) and keeps the blinkers off. (8) Magisterium will make her American debut after missing a win in a stake at Newmarket in England in August. Christophe Clement puts his top rider Rosario on board. (4) Amalfi Princess was third in her debut at Kentucky Downs for Mike Maker who is not known for having his firsters ready for a peak performance. Maker ships her to New York from Kentucky. (2) Fabricate was a first out winner for Ian Wilkes and followed that Churchill Downs victory with a third in the Debutante at Ellis Park. Her dam won three times on the grass, so Wilkes makes the move to the turf here.
Best bets: Price Talk (6th); Royal Approval (9th). Best value: Ms Boombastic (3rd); Caddo River (8th).
