Florida Handicapper Wins Keeneland's 2022 BCBC-NHC Fall Challenge
October 23, 2022Chad Gray of Orlando, Florida, rode The Queens Jules to victory in Keeneland’s 10th and final race on Oct. 15 to capture the 2022 BCBC-NHC Fall Challenge, the Keeneland Fall Meet’s biggest cash handicapping tournament with 214 players. For the victory, Gray took home $46,000 plus a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge (BCBC) and the National Horseplayers Championship (NHC).
Gray’s final bankroll of $23,701.80 was accumulated on the last race of the day, with $2,500 to win, a $106 exacta and a $20 trifecta. Second-place finisher Robert Traynor of Oceanside, California, just missed, with $2,678 to win on The Queens Jules and a final bankroll of $21,213.90 plus $23,000 in prize money.
In fact, the top seven finishers used The Queens Jules in the finale, and they moved to the top of the leaderboard.
Six BCBC and 10 NHC berths were awarded to the top finishers. BCBC entries were awarded to Gray and Traynor, along with James Metzger of Louisville, Frank Mustari of Chicago, Tim Hughes of Point Pleasant, New Jersey, and Kenny McMahan of Lexington. They will be back at Keeneland for the BCBC on Nov. 4-5 to compete in the largest cash tournament in the world.
NHC berths were awarded to Gray, Traynor, Metzger, Mustari and Hughes along with Joseph DiSanza of Floral Park, New York; Steve Nemetz of Surrey, British Columbia; Eric Kurzhal of South Bend, Indiana; Robert Hansan of McLean, Virginia, and Michael Gotkin of Thornhill, Ontario. The NHC is in Las Vegas in March 2023.
