The $750,000 Florida Derby, Gulfstream Park

14th race – (7) Tiz the Law is one of the favorites for the Kentucky Derby, though that does not have as much meaning as usual with the Run for the Roses a little more than five months away. But given all of the uncertainty surrounding the sport due to the coronavirus, horsemen are going to put more attention into this race than usual. Instead of prepping for the Kentucky Derby, there will be added interest to pocket a win now and that points in the direction of Tiz the Law. He’s best horse in the field and should duplicate a sharp win the Holy Bull over the track. (5) Gouverneur Morris has not been pushed hard, with just three career starts, but look for him to turn in a big effort here. (6) Ajaaweed has the look of a runner who will enjoy the nine-furlong distance and should make his presence felt here, especially in the final furlong. (9) Independence Hall has plenty of talent and speed, but he’s a question mark at a two-turn distance. This will be an acid test for hm. (12) Ete Indien finished three lengths behind Tiz the Law in the Holy Bull and then romped in the Fountain of Youth from the outside post. He’s on the outside again but there’s more speed here and with the possibility of a bounce after a big effort, he’s suspect here. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 5-6-7-9. Trifectas: 5-6-7-9 with 5-6-7-9 with 5-6-7-9-12.
