On Saturday over a turf course labeled as firm, trainer Chad Brown sent out his two Keeneland-based pre-entrants in the $2 million FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) Presented by PDJF – Carl Spackler (IRE) and Chili Flag (FR) – together for a half-mile breeze in :50.40. According to Keeneland clockers, their final quarter mile went in :22.80.
“I thought it was a great work, very straightforward,” said regular jockey Tyler Gaffalione, who rode Carl Spackler to win Keeneland’s Coolmore Turf Mile (G1) on Oct. 5. “He’s really feeling good out there. He’s a very forward horse, even in the afternoons. He’s just wanting to do it.”
Carl Spackler is owned by e Five Racing Thoroughbreds. Chili Flag, who was second in Keeneland’s First Lady (G1) Presented by UK HealthCare for fillies and mares on Oct. 5, races for Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb and Michael Kisber.
Gaffalione, the Fall Meet’s leading jockey with 22 wins going into today’s closing day, said he is confident how Carl Spackler will perform a week from today in the Breeders’ Cup.
“He’s shown us a lot,” Gaffalione said. “He’s shown us everything we need to see this year. He’s coming into the race with great form, so we have a ton of confidence. He’s been putting himself in the game a bit more. We probably won’t change anything up, but we’ll let him get out there, run his race and see if we’re good enough.”
Post positions for all 14 World Championships races will be drawn Monday beginning at 7:15 ET at the Rood & Riddle Post Position Draw in the Paddock at Del Mar. The event will be broadcast live on FanDuel TV and streamed on the Breeders’ Cup website, Official Mobile App, and Facebook, Twitter and YouTube channels.
On Wednesday, Oct. 30, Keeneland will hold its inaugural Championship Sale at Del Mar. Visit Championship.Keeneland.com for more information.
