Meat Loaf sang “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad,” a sentiment that was met with a gnashing of teeth for the Brad Cox barn on Friday, opening day of Keeneland’s Fall Meet.
Two Cox runners – Immersive in the Darley Alcibiades (G1) and Federal Judge in the Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix (G2) – each earned a fees-paid berth into corresponding races at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Del Mar on Nov. 1-2.
A third runner, Destino d’Oro, was beaten two noses in the Jessamine (G2) Presented by Keeneland Sales.
“I thought we had won it,” said Blake Cox, assistant to his father. “I was halfway down the tunnel (to the Winner’s Circle).”
Blake Cox said the three horses – Immersive, owned by Godolphin; Federal Judge, owned by WinStar Farm and Siena Farm; and Steve Landers Racing’s Destino d’Oro – came out of their races fine.
“Immersive and Federal Judge will go back to Churchill Downs on Sunday,” Blake Cox said. “Destino d’Oro might stay here and breeze on the grass. We will look at the Breeders’ Cup and see if she gets in.”
Regarding the runner-up and third-place finisher in the Darley Alcibiades:
Gregory Tramontin’s runner-up Quickick will be heading back to Churchill Downs to rejoin trainer Tom Amoss’ main string.
“She is in good shape this morning,” Amoss said. “We’ll see how everything goes and then make a decision (regarding the NetJets Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies-G1 at Del Mar on Nov. 1.)”
Trainer John Ortiz said plans are undecided for third-place finisher Quietside, who was 3¼ lengths behind the winner.
“She came back in great shape,” Ortiz said. “We are just taking it one day at a time. We’ll sit down with the team and come up with a plan. Maybe Breeders’ Cup or stay locally. We still have the Golden Rod (G2) (at Churchill Downs on Nov. 30) to look forward to. Lot of options. We like to travel the path of least resistance and get a couple more wins for her.”
