Highway Robber Hits the Highway Following Sycamore Victory

Susan and Jim Hill’s Highway Robber was fast on the Keeneland turf Friday afternoon and even faster getting back to Churchill Downs after his course-record victory in the Sycamore (G3).

“He came back here after the race, and everything is good this morning,” trainer Brian Lynch said from the Louisville track.

In edging defending Sycamore champion Bold Act (IRE) by a nose, Highway Robber completed the mile and a half in 2:26.08 to better the course record of 2:26.35 that was established by Rebel’s Romance (IRE) in winning the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1).

The Sycamore likely served as the last hurrah for 2024 for Highway Robber.

“We have no plans for the Breeders’ Cup (at Del Mar Nov. 2),” Lynch said. “We are going to point to the Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1) at Gulfstream on Jan. 25.”

The race also was the final 2024 North American outing for Bold Act.

“He will go back to Dubai like he did last year after this race. There’s nothing here for him now,” said Alex Merriam, assistant to trainer Charlie Appleby. “He put in a pretty solid run yesterday, and he was just a bit unlucky, that’s all. I wish we could have gotten the bob.”
