Keeneland September Yearling Sale Graduate Dornoch Wins Belmont Stakes

West Paces Racing, R. A. Hill Stable, Belmar Racing and Breeding, Two Eight Racing and Pine Racing Stables’ Dornoch, who was purchased for $325,000 at Keeneland’s 2022 September Yearling Sale, held off fellow September Sale graduate Mindframe to win the 156th running of the $2 million Belmont Stakes (G1) Presented by NYRA Bets today at Saratoga Race Course. A full brother to 2023 Kentucky Derby (G1) Presented by Woodford Reserve winner Mage, he is the 24th graduate of Keeneland sales to capture the Belmont and is the third in a row, following Mo Donegal (2022) and Arcangelo (2023).

Dornoch, who also won the Remsen (G2) and the Coolmore Fountain of Youth (G2), was bred by Grandview Equine. Consigned by Runnymede Farm, agent, to the September Sale, he sold to Oracle Bloodstock, agent. Danny Gargan trains Dornoch, who was ridden by Luis Saez. 

Dornoch’s dam, Puca, sold for $2.9 million to John Stewart at Keeneland’s 2023 November Breeding Stock Sale. Consigned by Case Clay Thoroughbred Management, agent, she was carrying a full sibling to Dornoch and Mage.

Runner-up Mindframe sold to owners Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable for $600,000 at the 2022 September Sale from the consignment of Betz Thoroughbreds, agent. Bred by R. Larry Johnson, he was ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Winners of other Saturday stakes from Saratoga included these Keeneland sales graduates:

  • Owner Klaravich Stables paid $420,000 for Randomized, winner of the Ogden Phipps (G1) Presented by Ford, at the 2021 September Sale. She was consigned by Four Star Sales, agent.
  • Jaipur (G1) Presented by Resolute Racing winner Cogburn was consigned by James B. Keogh (Grovendale), agent, as a weanling to the 2019 November Sale and sold to Clarmont Bloodstock Club for $52,000. He races for Clark O. Brewster and Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt.
  • West Bloodstock, agent for owners Repole Stable and St. Elias Stables, purchased Suburban (G2) winner Crupi for $275,000 at the 2021 September Sale from consignor Claiborne Farm, agent.
