Neecie Marie Gets Her Breeders’ Cup Run in Sunday’s Rood & Riddle Dowager

Trainer Butch Reid will put his perfect Keeneland record on the line Sunday when he sends out Michael Milam’s Neecie Marie in the $300,000 Rood & Riddle Dowager (G3) going 1½ miles on the turf.

Reid’s lone previous Keeneland starter was Vequist, who won the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).

Neecie Marie arrived at Keeneland from her home base at Parx in Pennsylvania Friday for her second trip to the state since early September, when she went to Kentucky Downs and won the

1 5/16-mile Light & Wonder Ladies Marathon (G3) by 2¾ lengths and become a millionaire in the process.

Reid had a choice between the Rood & Riddle Dowager or the 1 3/8-mile Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1) at Del Mar on Nov. 2 for the next race for Neecie Marie.

“We kind of tossed it around between this and the Breeders’ Cup, but there were too many variables involved and I don’t know if she would have gotten in the Breeders’ Cup,” Reid said. “It’s too hard to find mile-and-a-half races that will ultimately be best for her. So, this kind of is her Breeders’ Cup.”

A two-time graded stakes winner and four times graded stakes-placed, Neecie Marie has only one off-the-board finish in five races in 2024. That was a 10th in the Diana (G1) in July at Saratoga.

“There was no pace in that race, and she needs pace to run at,” Reid said. “(Joel) Rosario knows her and I am happy he is coming down to ride her tomorrow.”

Neecie Marie is named in honor of the owner’s late wife, Denise Marie.
