5th race [NY, Md 40000, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (1) Janssen (B) returned to the main track after trying the turf and ran a career best race to finish second far ahead of the rest of the field. (8) English Castle was claimed from a third-place finish last month and comes back as a new gelding. (9) My Life Story has a few efforts on the grass that make her a win contender in this field. (2) Check Cleared will make his debut for George Weaver as a son of the good turf runner Mendelssohn.
6th race [Md Sp Wt, 5 ½ F TURF] – (7) Miss C Banker (B) set the pace and finished second in her second race well clear of the rest of the field. (5) Episode was entered for the turf but was run on a sloppy and sealed track where she set the pace and finished second. (9) Linda’s Jewel was in that same race as the #5 horse and pressed the pace and got the show spot. (1) Graceful Warrior headed to Saratoga and was noted to be a 2-year-old to watch out for.
8th race [P G Johnson, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (2) Virgin Colada (A) won her debut on the turf at 9-2 odds with a late rally into a slow pace. (1) She’s Our Tiz (A) was an impressive winner of a turf sprint in her first career start at 9-2 with a stalking trip. (5) Second Chance (C) was bet down from 6-1 to 9-2 for Bill Mott and won her first start by a neck after pressing the pace. (3) Good Conduct (A) broke last in a 10 horse field at 9-2 and made up a lot of ground with an “eye-catching” late rally.
9th race [NY, Md 40000, 5 ½ F] – (4) Splashy ran well in several maiden special weights and now drops into a claimer for the first time. (5) Better Be Smart is another filly that has been running well enough in maiden special weight races with the last two in turf sprints. (2) Dreaming of Carli ran well in a turf sprint at Monmouth Park earlier in the summer. (10) Majulu moved onto the grass in her second start, pressed the pace just a head behind, and finished second.
Best bets: Miss C Banker (6th); Virgin Colada (8th). Best value: Janssen (5th); Splashy (9th).
