Keeneland realized double-digit increases in gross, average and median prices on Friday’s Day 4 of the November Breeding Stock Sale, topped by the $600,000 paid by Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm for Adoptable, a 3-year-old filly by Curlin who is a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner American Gal.
Today Keeneland sold 244 horses through the ring for $18,195,500, up 21.20% from the fourth session in 2023 when 243 horses brought $15,012,500. The average of $74,572 rose 20.71% from last year’s $61,780. The median climbed 20.00% from $50,000 to $60,000.
Cumulatively, 800 horses have sold through the ring for $143,802,000, an increase of 3.55% from the corresponding period last year when the 807 horses grossed $138,872,500. The average of $179,753 rose 4.46% from last year’s $172,085. The median of $115,000 was up 15.00% from $100,000.
Claiborne Farm, agent, consigned Adoptable, who is out of Grade 2-placed winner American Story, by Ghostzapper. She is also a half-sister to stakes winner Americanize and Grade 3-placed Magic Tap, and from the family of Grade/Group 1 winners Seventh Street and Reynaldothewizard.
“I own part of the family (including American Gal) and have been happy with the foals,” Pope said. “She’s good looking and we’re just trying to keep the family going. She could have been in Book 1 or Book 2; she qualified for that.”
Whisper Hill was Friday’s leading buyer, spending $870,000 for three horses.
Claiborne Farm Manager Bradley Purcell said he was “very happy with the sale” of Adoptable.
“She was a $450,000 yearling (sold at the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale), so we were thinking maybe $250,000 or $300,000,” Purcell added. “Very pleased with the outcome and with the home she got. She was a standout with her pedigree and her looks. She was in the right spot.”
Stakes winner and Grade 3-placed Unsung Melody, a 4-year-old daughter of Maclean’s Music, sold to Wimberley Bloodstock for $375,000. Out of Narrow Sea, by Bodemeister, she is from the family of champion and sire Good Magic. Unsung Melody was consigned by Grovendale Sales, agent, as a racing or broodmare prospect.
Claiborne Farm, agent, also consigned Outspoken, a 3-year-old winning full sister to Grade 1 winner and sire Volatile and stakes winner Buy Sell Hold who sold for $295,000 to Jess Sikura/4 Pillars, agent for Hill ‘n’ Dale. Outspoken is out of stakes winner Melody Lady, by Unbridled’s Song, and from the family of Grade 1 winner Lady Tak and Grade 2 winner Showcase. She was offered as a racing or broodmare prospect.
Matt Davis paid $280,000 for Speedy Vanessa, a 7-year-old mare by American Pharoah in foal to Yaupon. Out of The Right Pew, by Pulpit, she is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Karlovy Vary and from the family of Grade 2 winners Mean Mary and Great Intentions. Runnymede Farm, agent for Breed First (A Complete Dispersal), consigned Speedy Vanessa.
Three horses sold for $250,000 each, including two weanling colts.
Fred W. Hertrich II spent the amount for Second Row Center, a 6-year-old winning daughter of Uncle Mo who is a half-sister to multiple Grade 2 winner Wicked Halo. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, she is out of Grade 2 winner Just Wicked, by Tapit.
Taylor Made Sales Agency sold 31 horses for $2,574,000 to lead consignors.
Arrowhead Farm went to $250,000 to acquire a colt from the first crop by champion Jackie’s Warrior. Consigned by Scott Mallory, agent, he is a half-brother to stakes winner Let Her Inspire U and from the family of Grade 2 winner Halory Leigh. The colt is out of the winning Speightstown mare Caribbean Lady.
Also bringing $250,000 from Easy Living Stables was a weanling colt by Twirling Candy out of the winning Street Sense mare Jemmabelle. Consigned by Lane’s End, agent, the colt is from the family of Canadian champion Charlie Barley and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Success Express.
